What this means
2026 reporting rules
The threshold flip-flop, explained.
The 1099-K threshold has changed multiple times in recent years:
- Pre-2022: $20,000 + 200 transactions (per IRS for third-party network transactions).
- 2022 ARPA change: Reduced to $600 for any single transaction.
- 2022-2023: IRS delayed enforcement of the $600 threshold.
- 2024: Phased threshold of $5,000.
- 2025: Phased threshold of $2,500.
- OBBBA (signed 2025) reverted: 1099-K threshold returns to $20,000 + 200 transactions for tax year 2026 onward.
Important: Even if you don't receive a 1099-K, you still owe tax on every dollar of income. The threshold determines whether the platform reports to the IRS, not whether you owe tax.
Friends & family transfers (e.g., splitting dinner via Venmo) are NOT income and won't trigger a 1099-K even if they exceed thresholds — provided they're correctly classified.
