2026 reporting rules

The threshold flip-flop, explained.

The 1099-K threshold has changed multiple times in recent years:

  • Pre-2022: $20,000 + 200 transactions (per IRS for third-party network transactions).
  • 2022 ARPA change: Reduced to $600 for any single transaction.
  • 2022-2023: IRS delayed enforcement of the $600 threshold.
  • 2024: Phased threshold of $5,000.
  • 2025: Originally scheduled to drop to $2,500, but OBBBA §70432 (signed Sep 2025) retroactively reinstated $20,000 AND 200 transactions for TY 2025 per IRS FS-2025-08 (Oct 23, 2025). The $2,500 step-down was superseded before it took effect.
  • 2026 onward: $20,000 AND 200 transactions, permanently (OBBBA codified).

Important: Even if you don't receive a 1099-K, you still owe tax on every dollar of income. The threshold determines whether the platform reports to the IRS, not whether you owe tax.

Friends & family transfers (e.g., splitting dinner via Venmo) are NOT income and won't trigger a 1099-K even if they exceed thresholds — provided they're correctly classified.
